One of the most iconic owl species in New Zealand is the Morepork, also known as the Ruru in Maori. This small, brown owl is known for its haunting calls that echo through the forests at night. The Morepork is a skilled hunter, preying on insects, rodents, and other small creatures under the cover of darkness. In contrast, Lisbon, Portugal, is not typically associated with owls in the same way as New Zealand. However, Portugal is home to its own owl species, including the Eurasian Scops Owl. This small owl can be found in wooded areas and urban parks throughout Portugal, where it hunts for insects and small animals. Despite being on opposite sides of the world, both New Zealand and Portugal offer unique opportunities to observe and appreciate owls in their natural habitats. Whether you find yourself in the dense forests of New Zealand or the historic streets of Lisbon, keep an eye out for these fascinating birds of prey.
