In New Zealand, one of the most well-known species of owls is the morepork, also known as the ruru in Maori. The morepork is a small, native owl that is mostly nocturnal and can be found in forests, farmlands, and even urban areas. With its distinctive haunting call that sounds like "more pork," these owls play an important role in the ecosystem by regulating insect populations. While the morepork is not considered threatened in New Zealand, conservation efforts are still in place to protect its habitat and ensure its survival. On the other side of the world, in Cyprus, the country is home to the Eurasian Scops Owl. This small owl is a summer visitor to Cyprus and can be found in various habitats, including forests, olive groves, and even urban areas. The Eurasian Scops Owl is known for its distinctive "whinnying" call and its ability to blend in seamlessly with its surroundings due to its cryptic plumage. Conservation efforts are also in place to protect this owl species in Cyprus and ensure its continued presence on the island. Both New Zealand and Cyprus are lucky to have these intriguing creatures as part of their biodiversity. Owls play a vital role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems and are a symbol of wisdom and mystery in many cultures around the world. Whether you're in the lush forests of New Zealand or the sunny landscapes of Cyprus, keep an eye out for these silent hunters of the night – the owls.
