Deepfake technology allows users to create highly realistic videos by superimposing faces and voices onto existing footage. This manipulation can be used to deceive viewers into believing false information or portraying individuals in a negative light. In the case of the New Zealand tragedy, there were concerns that deepfake videos could be used to further sensationalize the horrific events and amplify hate speech. The spread of deepfake videos related to the New Zealand tragedy poses a threat to social cohesion and public trust. Such videos could potentially fuel existing prejudices and lead to further violence and discrimination. It is essential for authorities and tech companies to take proactive measures to combat the spread of deepfakes and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. In response to the rise of deepfake technology, there have been calls for increased regulation and oversight to prevent its misuse. Tech companies are also developing tools to detect and remove deepfake content from their platforms. Additionally, raising awareness about the existence of deepfakes and educating the public about how to identify manipulated videos are crucial steps in combating their harmful effects. As the use of deepfake technology continues to evolve, it is essential for society to remain vigilant and critically evaluate the information they consume. By staying informed and supporting efforts to combat the spread of deepfakes, we can help prevent tragedies like the one in New Zealand from being exploited for malicious purposes.
