In recent years, deepfake technology has become a growing concern in various sectors, including politics, entertainment, and now in the realm of public speaking. New Zealand, known for its vibrant public discourse and engaged citizenry, is not immune to the potential risks and challenges posed by deepfake technology in the realm of public speaking. Deepfake technology enables the creation of highly realistic but entirely fabricated videos or audio recordings that can be used to manipulate or misrepresent individuals. This technology is increasingly being used to create false narratives or defame public figures by making them appear to say or do things they never actually did. In the context of public speaking in New Zealand, deepfake technology could have serious implications for trust, authenticity, and accountability. Public speakers, including politicians, activists, and thought leaders, rely on their credibility and the trust of their audience to effectively convey their message and influence public opinion. The rise of deepfake technology threatens to erode this trust by making it easier to deceive and manipulate audiences. Moreover, the spread of deepfake videos could also lead to the dissemination of misinformation and the distortion of public discourse. In a country like New Zealand, where open and honest communication is valued, the proliferation of deepfake technology poses a significant threat to the integrity of public debates and discussions. To address the challenges posed by deepfake technology in public speaking, it is crucial for policymakers, tech companies, and individuals to take proactive steps to combat the spread of misinformation and deepfake content. This could involve implementing stronger regulations around the creation and dissemination of deepfakes, investing in technologies that can detect and prevent deepfake content, and raising awareness among the public about the risks associated with deepfake technology. Ultimately, the impact of deepfake technology on public speaking in New Zealand highlights the need for vigilance, critical thinking, and a collective effort to safeguard the integrity of public discourse. By staying informed and actively working to prevent the misuse of deepfake technology, New Zealanders can help protect the authenticity and credibility of public speaking in their country.
